Nemo’s War is a game based on Jules Verne’s classic novel Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, which tells the story of Captain Nemo and his fantastical submarine, the Nautilus. An interesting factoid about Nemo’s War is that it seems to keep a focus on the quality of the single-player experience, keeping the quality of its solitaire gaming experience as a priority. In fact, some chatter about the game suggests that the game’s co-op mode wasn’t originally planned, and was added because of requests made by its Kickstarter backers.

It has been loosely compared to Robinson Crusoe – while still standing on its own with its own unique mechanisms and approach to telling the adventures taking place in an electric-powered submersible, during a time of anti-Imperialism, and War! The combination of these features all together in a package make it understandable why Nemo’s War starts off our countdown this month in the number ten slot.

The 7th Continent’s Kickstarter was successfully funded in fall of 2015, and then underwent an extensive development period, and appears to have finally been completed and started shipping to its backers in late July. Will it have been worth the wait? Well, let’s hope so, because The 7th Continent strives to be a solo or cooperative “choose your own adventure” exploration game, accomplishing this with a variety of cards, such as terrain and events – each of which can affect the story’s progress and direction.

The game’s developers state that the game is designed to take players many hours to complete the game’s stories. Along the way, it features a “quick save” system, allowing players to stop playing at any time and resume their adventure later on, similar to saving a video game in order to pause and resume it later. Will the years of development of this system pay off, or is The 7th Continent better left unsaved?

In Dice Forge, players fight to gain valor with the gods, using an armory of dice with removable faces. This allows players to customize their dice to make them more powerful as the game progresses. These dice will produce the resources the players need in order to overcome ordeals concocted by the gods.

Dice customization still seems to be a fairly new and unexplored idea in board game design. The other most recent dice customization game that comes to my mind is 2014’s Rattlebones. Rattlebones received moderate praise from critics, mostly because of its innovative dice mechanism. However, after its novelty wore off, Rattlebones seems to have faded into obscurity for the most part.

Will Dice Forge suffer the same fate? Or, does this dice building game have more to offer in terms of gameplay and longevity than its predecessor?

    3:10 where did this (The 7th Continent) image come from? I don't recall seeing it before. Seems to give some hints as to the geography of the continent?

    The concept of what you're doing in Splendor and Spice Road
    is similar (collecting sets of colored tokens to buy cards with),
    but they're mechanically very different.

    I didn't feel Century: Spice Road was really that much like Splendor. I don't understand the comparison. They both have engine building…but in that sense, Imperial Settlers is just like Splendor.

    Not that I agree with it, but every single LCG requires at least 2, if not 3 core sets to get the max number of copies of certain cards. This has been the same with star wars, conquest, AGoT, NR, Lot5R, LotR, Arkham horror. It didn't affect any of those, so I doubt that it will affect Lot5R either.

    Having said that, I've dialed my enthusiasm WAY back for FFG games over that last few years. They've pretty much become the expandable competitive game company and their business model that requires you to buy things that you don't need just to get 1 set or even a card has completely turned me off to their products anymore. The only thing I have any excitement for of theirs is Fallout. Outside of that, I'll pass on FFG stuff, which is very sad because just over 5 years ago, they were my favorite board game company and it wasn't close.

    I don't do Kickstarters, but 7th Continent was tempting. Looking forward to seeing more reviews because it looks amazing from what feedback and tutorials I have seen so far. If it seems to be holding up I will have to find a copy. They are doing another kickstarter in fall so it may be my first kickstarter back if it keeps doing well and I can't find it anywhere.

    I've always seen Arkham Horror as a solo game.  Man I really wouldn't want to be responsible for doing that to two of us.  Although I could play it with two if we both play as particular characters (classes, really)  In fact with two sets rammed together it would cause some rule S.N.A.F.U.s, such as certain cards that must be included and by rules interpretation I mean "It's going in thanks to the "Grim" rule" and that would not be a good thing.  So if you have two of them, suck it up.  In fact there are two of each of the most important protection cards which, since you have to buy your cards I don't think anyone could or would want to have all four.  As long as you get at least a couple more small expansion packs (or optimally, the deluxe.) you will be fine with two players and only one core set.  It was heartening to hear the success of Sword & Sorcery!  If they have improved on Galaxy Defenders (a favorite of mine and top 5) then well, I guess a game of mine might actually get fired.  The system in G.D. is outstanding.  It combines with the enemy variety and their powers to offer a fair challenge that makes sense for those enemies.  If S&S is even better, Formula D might just get a pink slip.  It's not you Formula D, I-It's me.  Whenever I want to play you I look at you and think "Yeah but that's gonna' be soooo hype with 10!!"  So we just play something else.  Also the evolution of Galaxy Defenders!  The way we play it might as well be called Galaxy Quest.  I swear if Ares would have actually intentionally made this a satire, it would have sold much better.  The missions, rightly, are focused on complimenting the mechanisms.  You don't want to have to write seriously for that.  Still in my top 5 and the reason I'm willing to fire something as compelling as Formula D for.  Great list, thank you for the information Chaz! 🙂

    All of the LCGs require multiple sets to "Play Competitively". Yes, you can play with one base set, but two are recommended. (I play Netrunner, and two is pretty common.)
